OnWisconsin Magazine Article
The magazine I chose was OnWisconsin, which does an article on Rose Lavelle, my favorite soccer player. She attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, which is why this magazine company published this article specifically about her. It highlights how, in 2003, she watched the USWNT lose in the semifinals of the World Cup and then attended a match in 2004 in her hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio. Now, she has girls looking up to her, and I am one of them. This article explains her thoughts and others’ views on her at the 2019 World Cup. She arrived in France and was one of the team’s most vital players as she scored three goals in six games, one of which was the title-clinching goal in the final against the Netherlands. This article shows all the challenges she faced and has overcome to be the player she is today, along with comments people made, like even back when she started playing DI soccer, that “She’s going to get killed in college.” She was 96 lbs when her college coach met her, and she took her on, knowing Lavelle knew how to avoid getting “killed,” she did exactly that during her time at UW. She was a four-time all-Big Ten pick, a three-time All-American, and the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NWSL draft.
I believe that this article accomplishes its goals of being engaging/effective. It shares Rose Lavelle’s setbacks and achievements, which is engaging because it shows some vulnerability when mentioning the hate she got. The title is also effective because it is titled “Rose Lavelle: Soccer’s New Superstar,” I believe it grabs people’s attention to see why she is the new superstar. I think it is more engaging to people interested in soccer. Still, even if you do not, I think the title is engaging enough; some people would skim it, and it is broken up throughout the article with quotes as other headers, which is also engaging. Overall, I think it does an excellent job of achieving its goals. There are also photos that help tell the story in this article; the first is a picture of Rose after she scored the title-clinching goal in the 2019 Women’s World Cup. In this picture, you can see her emotion, her happiness, and how much this goal meant to her and the USWNT. The following image is one at the Memorial Union, which is in Wisconsin. There was a watch party for the World Cup, and everyone packed in here, cheering after Rose scored that goal in the final. It shows how supportive the community is and everyone who believes in her. These images combine the whole story because you can see the emotions, giving you another perspective, not just trying to imagine it in your head.
