Special SI Cover: U.S. women’s national team’s World Cup triumph – Sports Illustrated

The Sports Illustrated cover I selected is the one with members from the 2015 Women’s World Cup team. The photographer for this cover was Simon Bruty. It perfectly captures the moment of the US celebrating their victory after beating Japan, who broke their hearts in the 2011 World Cup, sending them home without a trophy. This specific cover is a special digital one; however, compared to the non-digital one he took, this one resonates more because it is a picture of their raw emotions holding the trophy immediately after, not posing for a photo later. This specifically resonates with me because I played soccer my whole life, and the 2015 World Cup was the first one I watched for the women, and I was so excited before each game. I knew every player, their number, and even facts about them. My cousin Aly and I were obsessed with this team. I remember being on vacation at another family member’s house and asking them if I could watch the game because I did not want to miss it. They put it on for me, and I did not move from the couch until it was over. I saw them hoist this trophy live in the air after Carli Lloyd’s incredible performance, scoring a goal from half-field and breaking a record. The whole team did amazing, and this team was one I idolized while playing soccer growing up. Looking at this cover now, all the hate the US team gets hurts because I agree with some moments that the current USWNT is nothing like the one in the picture here. This picture shows a team that trained and persevered through the tournament and played for the game, not the fame, whereas, at the most recent Women’s World Cup, I can’t say the same about the USWNT. This cover is also special to me because I had the Sports Illustrated magazine version of this with the cover of the whole team posing with the trophy but without the raw emotion. So, seeing this version is unique because I remember the exact moment I saw it happen on my cousin’s couch in NJ and was so happy I was able to witness such a great moment for the USWNT, earning their third star and breaking so many records in one night.
